Before you can cure the problem of constipation, just try and understand the cause of it so that it can be treated effectively. The various reasons are as follows:

  1. Modification in diet: Certain changes in diet like starting a new weight-loss program or having more of greasy food, high-fat or processed food can lead to constipation. Also, consuming alcohol or even a lot of caffeine causes increased excretion and urination of water which leads to dehydration thus causing constipation. Eating food less in fiber also causes constipation.
  2. Lack of fluids: Drinking less of fluids can result in constipation. As fluids are absorbed in the intestine and help in softening the stool. Also, you need to remove the myth that artificial beverages are fluid, they are not and instead trigger constipation.
  3. Lack of exercise: A lazy lifestyle slows down the metabolism which in turn reduces the digestion and hence causes constipation.
  4. Prolonged medication: Certain painkillers, antidepressants, vitamin and iron supplements and other medicines can also bring the system of the body to halt and cause constipation.

1) Lemon juice and honey to loosen up: This is a very good remedy for occasional constipation. Lemon helps to flush out the toxins from the digestive system and honey acts as a mild laxative. You can also use salt instead of honey which is rich in magnesium and contracts the bowel muscles and also helps to remove the toxins from the intestine.

You will need: Water, lemon, honey or salt.

How to use:

Heat some water and add 1 tsp. of lemon juice and ½ tsp. of honey or a little salt.

Drink this mixture to get rid of constipation.

2) Ayurveda as a laxative: Triphala which is made of Harad (black myrobalan) which has antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties and helps in treating diarrhea and constipation both.

You will need: Triphala powder, water, honey (optional)

How to use:

Add 1 tsp. of Triphala powder to warm water and mix well.

Drink this mixture in one go before sleeping and do not eat or drink anything after having this.

This mixture tastes bitter and hence you may add a spoon of honey to it if you find it difficult to gulp.

3) Castor or Olive oil as a greasing agent: Oils are laxatives and are needed on the track for easy movement in the intestines. Hence adding olive oil, castor oil or ghee to your diet helps in treating constipation.

You will need: Olive oil or castor oil or ghee

How to use:

Take 1 tsp. of any of olive oil, castor oil or ghee and have on the empty stomach.

You will be able to see the effects in 8 hours or so.

4) Baking soda for fizzling: Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda on reacting with the acids in the stomach produces salt, carbon dioxide and water which helps in bowel movement.

You will need:  Baking soda, water

How to use:

To a ¼ cup of warm water, add 1 tsp. of baking soda. Mix well and drink.

This not only helps with constipation but also works for acidity and stomach ache.

5) Water to treat dehydration: Fluid is required to ease the bowel movement and is required to treat dehydration. Sparkling or carbonated water can help more but should be avoided as drinks like sugary soda can be bad for health.

You require: Water

How to use:

Just drink a lot of water, 8-10 glasses to get rid of constipation.

6) Include fiber to aid digestion: You should increase the fiber content in your diet and hence increase the intake of foods like oats, lentils, flaxseeds and chia seeds.

7) Foods to eat: Include the following foods in your diet to get rid of constipation:

Prune juice: Rich in fiber.

Raisins: Rich in fiber and tartaric acid.

Spinach: Good source of magnesium.

Bananas: Very high in fiber but have only ripe and soft bananas. Unripe ones will aggravate the problem.

Beans: Beans contain pinto, kidney, and garbanzo and are rich in fiber which helps     in bowel movement.

Peanut Butter: Provides the nutrition required to help fight constipation.

8) Aloe Vera to speed up intestinal movement: This contains anthraquinone which acts as a laxative and the increased water level can help soften the stool.

9) Exercise regularly: Exercise regularly or at least go for a walk daily. It aids in proper digestions and hence avoids constipation.

10) Coffee to stimulate digestive system: Coffee has soluble fiber and helps in stimulating the muscles in the gut thereby providing relief from constipation.

11) Take the right diet: Take a diet which is without oil, fats or sweets and also avoid foods like cheese, bread, potatoes, and pork. Foods like ghee, ginger juice, psyllium and rose should be included to help treat constipation.

12) Have coconut water: It is rich in electrolytes and can help relieve constipation. But have it too much as it softens the stool and too much of it might lead to diarrhea.

13) Dandelion tea as a laxative: It helps in removing toxins and in loosening up of the bowels.

You will need: Water, dandelion tea

How to use:

  • Boil a cup of water and add 1 tsp. of dandelion tea and let it steep.
  • Drink this tea 3-4 times a day.

14) Try using lesser Dairy products: If you are intolerant to lactose then you should avoid dairy products as it could lead to constipation. But make sure to replace dairy products with calcium-rich foods to avoid calcium deficiency.
