What is Acidity ?

It occurs when there is excess secretion of acids in the gastric glands of the stomach which produces gas and is accompanied by bad breath, chest pain, stomach ache etc. The pain rises from the stomach towards the chest and can move up to throat or neck.   1. Stress: Our lifestyle is responsible for our health. Leading a hectic lifestyle, going through stress and lack of sleep causes a change in our eating habits or irregular meals which is not good for digestion and hence can lead to acidity.
  2. Obesity: People with excess belly fat tend to exert more pressure on the stomach which causes Hiatal Hernia and leads to backflow of acid thereby causing acidity.
  3. Stomach disorders or abnormalities: Various stomach disorders like ulcers, stomach tumors, hiatal hernia are accompanied by acidity.

  11. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, there is an enhancement in the level of hormones along with the increase in pressure from the fetus. This might lead to acidity.

Home Remedies to cure Acidity Naturally

It is a very painful and irritating condition and therefore needs to get rid of as soon as possible. Do not wait to go to the chemist and pop in some antacid and instead try the following home remedies which will help reduce acidity :

1) Baking soda as a replacement for antacid: Baking soda is a base substance and has antacid properties and hence help in reducing heartburn. It might not be tasty but is very effective.

Requirements: Baking soda, and water.

How to use:

  • Add 1 tsp. of baking soda to a glass of water.
  • Stir it well and drink the mixture.
  • Repeat it not more than 7 times a day and not more than a week.

2) Aloe Vera juice to soothe stomach: It helps in reducing inflammation and hence helps in getting relieved from the irritation caused by the stomach or esophagus.

Requirements: Aloe Vera, and water.

How to use:

  • Take a piece of fresh Aloe Vera, peel off the skin, add water and blend it.
  • Simply drink ½ a cup of Aloe Vera juice kept at room temperature or a little cold.

3) Apple Cider Vinegar to treat indigestion
: It has alkalizing properties which help in neutralizing the acid in the stomach. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which reduces water retention capacity thereby easing the problem of acidity.

Requirements: Apple Cider Vinegar, Honey, and Cinnamon

How to use:

  • Add 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp. each of honey and roasted cinnamon powder to a glass of warm water.
  • Mix it well and drink this solution to get relief from acidity.

4) Fennel seeds to soothe stomach:
Fennel seeds have been used to do away with bad breath but they also help to treat indigestion and therefore eaten by many after dinner too. It is a good source of minerals like vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc which help to neutralize the acid in the stomach and prevent constipation, vomiting, and nausea.

Requirements: Fennel seeds, Water, and Apple cider vinegar.

How to use:

  • Add fennel seeds (2 tbsp.) to water (1 glass) and bring it to boil.
  • Strain the water and add apple cider vinegar (1 tsp.).
  • Then stir this mixture properly and drink it.
  • You can also simply chew some fennel seeds just after your meals or 1 tsp. of roasted and ground powdered fennel seeds two times a day.

5) Cinnamon as an antacid
: It is an herb which is a magical spice and apart from being a pleasant addition to the dishes, also helps in indigestion. Helps to get quick relief from stomach bloating and cramps. It should be avoided by pregnant women.

Requirements: Cinnamon powder, fennel seeds, and water.

How to use:

  • Add fennel seeds (2 tsp.) and roasted cinnamon powder (1 tsp.) to water (1 cup).
  • Bring this mixture to boil for approximately 5 mins.
  • Strain the tea and drink it warm.
  • Have this daily to get a healthy digestive system.

6) Basil to cure indigestion particularly all through pregnancy:
It is an herb which has a lot of medicinal property which helps to soothe the acidic stomach as well as get instant relief. It is absolutely harmless to be used up by expected mothers too.

Requirements: Basil leaves, black pepper, and water.

How to use:

  • To water (1 glass), add black pepper (2 pinches) and a few basil leaves.
  • Boil the water for about 5-10 mins.
  • Drink this cup of tea 2-3 times a day.

7) Cumin seeds as an ayurvedic remedy:
It helps in providing relief from constipation and acidity by boosting digestion. It helps in regulating pancreatic enzymes and is a good acid neutralizer.

Requirements: Cumin seeds and water.

How to use:

  • Roast cumin seeds (2 tbsp.) and squash it to make a fine powder.
  • Add it to water (half a cup) and drink 2-3 times a day.

8) Ginger to lemon to fight gastrointestinal issues:
It is identified for its great digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.

Requirements: Ginger, salt, Lemon, honey (optional), and water.

How to use:

  • Shell the skin of a ginger and take out its juice.
  • Add lemon juice (1 tsp.) and a grain of salt. You may add a small spoon of honey too.
  • Add water (half cup) and drink this solution for 3-4 times in a day.
  • You can also simply chew a piece of ginger or have its juice 2-3 times per day.

9) Lemon juice and warm water:
Have lemon juice and warm water on empty stomach, 15-20 minutes before eating anything. It helps to naturally balance out the acid level.

12) Oils to get relief from Indigestion:
Some essential oils are a good source of antibacterial enzymes, antioxidants and have laxative properties and hence should be a part of our diet. Some of these oils like coconut oil, soy oil and clove oil can be used to treat indigestion and get relief from pain.

Requirements: Essential oils like coconut oil, soy oil and clove oil.

How to use:

  • Simply use 1-2 tsp. of essential oil regularly to see the effects.

13) Buttermilk for alleviating indigestion: Buttermilk is the fluid residue formed when butter is churned to obtain cream. It is a good source of potassium, calcium and sodium and owing to high amount of lactic acid helps to reduce pain in upper abdomen.

Requirements: Buttermilk, coriander leaves or black pepper powder.

How to use:

  • To chilled buttermilk (1 glass), add black pepper powder (2 pinches) or coriander leaves.
  • Mix well and have it and after before or while having a meal.


14) Pomegranate for stomach treatment: It helps in reducing giddiness and nausea which happens due to indigestion and is in general very good for the stomach.

Requirements: Pomegranate and honey.

How to use:

  • Take some pomegranate seeds and extract its juice.
  • Add a spoon of honey and mix well and have this mixture 2-3 times a day.

15) Sleep well: Taking proper sleep is enough to treat many problems and acidity is no exception. Have at least 8 hours of sleep and try sleeping on your left side as it is found that sleeping on your right side can cause extra pressure that increases the chances of GERD.
