What causes dandruff ?

The right question to ask is what causes dandruff so that accordingly cure can be thought of. Following are the main causes of dandruff:

a) Dry Skin: Dry skin results in dandruff not only on the head but on other parts of the body like arms and legs too. Accumulation of dry and dead skin causes dandruff.

b) Sensitivity to Yeast: If you avoid having food that has yeast or if you see more of dandruff in winters than in summers, the reason may be sensitivity to yeast.

c) Dirty scalp: If you do not shampoo often, it may cause the accumulation of dead cells which shed leading to dandruff and also attract microbes which also leads to yeast and fungus formation.

d) Seborrheic dermatitis: This is a condition in which one has itchy, irritated, red, greasy and rash prone scalp. It affects the areas which tend to produce excess oil and hence hold dirt such as eyebrows, breastbone, armpits etc.

e) Not combing enough: If you do not comb enough, it results in accumulation of dry and dead skin. Therefore, regular and sufficient combing can reduce dandruff.

f) Skin diseases: If one has skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis etc. then it is most likely that dandruff appears on the scalp.

g) Mental Stress: Stress also results in dandruff. Take at least 8 hours of sleep and some massage.

h) Diet: A good diet helps in maintaining the scalp condition and if a good diet does not go inside, it can definitely cause the problem of dandruff.

1) Apple Cider Vinegar as a soother: It has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that kills dandruff-causing fungi and helps treat dandruff. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help soothe irritation and inflammation. It also helps in balancing oil production in the scalp and hence reduce formation of dandruff.

You will need: 3 tbsp. of Apple Cider Vinegar

How to use:

  • Gently massage the apple cider vinegar on the scalp.
  • Leave it on for about 10 minutes, wash hair with shampoo and apply conditioner.
  • Repeat it once or twice a week.

2) Coconut oil as a deep conditioner: It is rich in vitamins and fatty acids which helps to nourish the scalp. It also has antimicrobial properties which help in treating dry, damaged hair with dandruff. It is also antifungal, a great moisturizer and conditioner which can easily penetrate the skin and heal the scalp.

You will need: Coconut oil and a shower cap/towel.

How to use:

  • Wash your hair with shampoo but do not apply conditioner.
  • Take 2-3 tbsp. of coconut oil, rub between your palms and apply all over your hair from roots to tips covering the scalp.
  • Cover your hair with a shower cap or a towel to provide a warm atmosphere so that the oil penetrates deeper.
  • You can keep it overnight or for minimum 30 minutes and wash it off with shampoo making sure that no traces of oil are left behind.

3) Tea Tree Oil as natural conditioner: It has antifungal and antibacterial properties which help in fighting dandruff. It acts as a natural conditioner and helps treat the problem of dandruff formation.

You will need: Shampoo, Tea tree oil

How to use:

  • Add about 10 drops of tea tree oil per 8 ounces of shampoo and let them blend nicely.
  • Apply on the scalp, let it sit for at least 5 minutes before rinsing it off.

4) Baking Soda as a natural antiseptic: It is a fantastic remedy found in your kitchen and is also cheaper than other solutions available. It is a natural antiseptic which helps to treat dandruff-causing fungus.

You will need: Baking soda, Lukewarm water.

How to use:

  • Add 2-3 tbsp. of baking soda to a cup warm water. Mix well and apply on the scalp.
  • Massage gently and let it stand for 1-2 minutes and wash it with shampoo.

5) Neem Oil as a preventive measure to dandruff: It has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which are not only effective in getting rid of dandruff, redness and scalp irritation but can also prevent its occurrence.

You will need: Neem oil, Avocado oil, Lavender oil

How to use:

  • Take 1 tsp. of neem oil and add to it with 3-4 tbsp. of avocado oil and 4-5 drops of lavender oil and mix it all well.
  • Apply this mixture to your scalp and massage gently.
  • Let it stand for an hour or leave overnight for best results and wash off.

6) Castor Oil as an excellent air conditioner and humectant: It has Ricinoleic acid which has antimicrobial, fungicidal and germicidal properties which kills bacteria that causes dandruff and protect the scalp from microbial and fungal infections. It also acts as a moisturizer, conditioner and is rich in nutrients.

You will need: Castor oil, Other oils like Jojoba and Olive oil (optional)

How to use:

  • Apply castor oil or mix it with Jojoba and Olive oil and apply on the scalp.
  • Let it stand for minimum 20 minutes or leave it overnight for better results.
  • Wash it off with shampoo.

7) Green Tea as a nourishment and moisturizer for the scalp: It helps to moisturize the hair and the cells on the scalp and help loosen the dead skin cells.

You will need: Green tea leaves or green tea bags, shower cap or plastic bag.

How to use:

  • Heat 1-2 cups of water to reach it to boiling point.
  • Add 2 tsp. of loose green tea leaves or 2 tea bags to the boiling water and let it stand for at least 20 minutes or overnight for better effectiveness.
  • Wash your hair with shampoo and rinse.
  • Let the tea cool down and then apply the leaves or the bag on the scalp and let it stand for an hour.
  • For better results cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag which provides moisture and warmth to the scalp.

8) Garlic: It has antimicrobial properties which help to fight dandruff causing bacteria and can also use for hair, skin and immune system.

You will need: Garlic and honey.

How to use:

  • Crush garlic and add honey to avoid the smell.
  • Massage on the scalp and wash it off.

9) Yogurt as an antibacterial agent: it is available there in your refrigerator and helps prevent dandruff-causing bacteria and also strengthens the air and provides shine.

You will need: yogurt

How to use:

  • Wash your hair with water and apply a lot of yogurt to the scalp.
  • Leave it on for 10-15 minutes and rinse it off.

10) Fish Oil as dry scalp remedy: Fish such as Sardines, tuna, salmon, herring, and mackerel are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties and deficiency of which may lead to dandruff.

You will need: Fish or fish oil supplements

How to use:

Include fish in your diet and have it.

Use fish oil supplements like capsules, pills etc.

11) Yogurt with Lemon: This mixture has very strong anti-bacterial properties to get rid of dandruff and when mixed with oil can also provide required nourishment for the dry hair.

You will need: Lemon, yogurt.

How to use:

  • Add 2 tbsp. of yogurt to the juice of 1 lemon.
  • Apply the mixture to the scalp and let it stand for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse off with shampoo and warm water

12) Aloe Vera as an itch-fighter: This not only makes dandruff go away but also helps fight itching. Cooling effects of Aloe Vera helps treat itching.

You will need: Aloe Vera

How to use:

  • Take some Aloe Vera and massage it on your scalp and then wash it off with shampoo.

13) Egg Yolks as a strengthener: Egg contains amino acids which help strengthen the roots of the hair and get rid of dandruff.

You will need: Egg white, lemon juice

How to use:

  • Take 2 egg white and whip it well.
  • Add lemon juice to it.
  • Apply this mixture to the scalp, let it stand for 5 minutes and rinse off with water and shampoo.

14) Salt as a dandruff remover: Salt is abrasive and helps to scrub out dandruff.

You will need: Salt and saltshaker.

How to use:

  • Shake salt on your scalp using saltshaker and massage.
  • Wash hair with shampoo.
