Halitosis is the scientific name for bad breath. Some people suffer from bad breath just because of food or from poor dental health, but there are other ways to develop bad breath that are harder to fight and treat.


Food and Digestion

When you eat, food is broken down in the mouth. During digestion, food is absorbed into the bloodstream and since blood travels all over the body, the food in their broken down form pass through the lungs. As you breathe, the odors travel through the mouth. As the food is digested, the bad breath odors leave the body.

Bad Habits That Cause Bad Breath

There are a few poor habits that can also create bad breath. The first is bad dental care, like not brushing or flossing daily. If you avoid brushing and flossing, bacteria will grow between your teeth and in your mouth. Bad breath can also happen to people who wear dentures, but do not properly or regularly clean them, too.

The second bad habit that can cause bad breath is smoking. Chewing tobacco also causes bad breath. Not only are these habits disgusting, but they can also irritate the gums, stain the teeth, and damage your taste buds. Smoking breath is one of the smelliest habits.

If you do not eat smelly foods and you do not use any tobacco products, you might another health issue that is causing your bad breath. The health issues that cause bad breath include

Treating Your Bad Breath

Before you begin to treat your bad breath, it is a good idea to know exactly why you have the problem. Once you know why you have halitosis, you can begin figuring out how to fight it.

1) Leave tobacco the very first day

First, if you have bad habits like smoking or chewing tobacco, the best way to fight bad breath is to stop smoking or chewing. Also, if you do not brush your teeth regularly, begin now and use an antibacterial mouthwash, too. If you wear dentures, clean those daily, too.

2) Try chewing Gums

If you have a dry mouth, begin chewing gum. When you chew gum, your mouth will create more saliva and will wash away the bacteria and keep your breath fresher. You can also stimulate saliva by sucking on peppermints or other sugarless candies.

3) Lemon Juice

Lemon is highly acidic in nature. This much acidic nature is strong enough to kill all those bacteria that is causing bad breath in your mouth. Well, bacteria is not the only reason for it there could be more but if it is bacteria Lemon is more than enough to take care of it.

4) Visit Your Dentist

Sometimes the reason for halitosis could be some mouth tissue infection, infection in teeth or anything relevant. To counter with all these one should visit to a dentist about for bad breath, as well as the health of your gums and teeth.

Your dentist will work with you to diagnose the problem and if your dentist cannot do it, he or she will refer to you a peridontist. Your family physician can also help you if your dentist cannot figure out the problem.
